Staying at a vineyard in Bordeaux

There are many ways to experience Bordeaux. While it's pleasant to sample a fine bottle in a restaurant, or to wander through the vineyards for a day, the real magic happens when you stay in the middle of the vines. It's here that we understand why this region remains the world's leading wine destination. It's about living to the rhythm of the estate: contemplating the rows of Merlot vines illuminated by the first rays of sunshine, pedaling back to the village for pastries as the mist rises over the Gironde, and gathering around a table set in the grounds of an estate steeped in three centuries of history.
This is the experience we offer when you stay at the Château Gigault. Not a hotel. Not a resort. A real, working, family-run winery, in the’Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, where the people who welcome you are the same ones who grow the vines and share the fruits of their labor with you. At every turn, an authentic, serene and sun-drenched France reveals itself to you.

A winery steeped in history

Nestled atop the Mazion hill, just four kilometers east of the Gironde estuary and six kilometers north of Blaye, the Château Gigault is an 18th-century winegrowing estate, one of those historic residences that have been deeply rooted in the Gironde terroir for centuries. Today, it is owned by Christophe Reboul Salze, a man whom his guests know personally, and who is described by one of them as «a very friendly host, always available». The famous Cock and Ferret's Guide to Bordeaux Wines describes the estate as «rare and exceptional, prompting wine lovers to compare it with the greatest Bordeaux wines».
But Château Gigault is much more than just a winery. It's a veritable art of living, lulled by the peaceful rhythm of the French countryside: here, lunches stretch out, the end of the day takes on a golden glow, and conversations always return, quite naturally, to the contents of the glass. When you stay with us, you're not just a passing visitor. You are the privileged guest of a family estate in full activity, welcomed in the heart of a residence that carries its history in its stone walls, in the atmosphere of its cellar and even in the remarkable clay-limestone terroir that stretches out beneath your feet.
Le Gîte: Eight rooms, an unforgettable estate

The Château Gigault gîte is group accommodation in the purest French tradition: an entire estate reserved exclusively for a single group of travelers. With eight spacious bedrooms with room for up to fifteen people, divided between six double beds and six single beds, and eight bathrooms with towels provided, it lends itself perfectly to family reunions, gatherings of friends, celebrations or wine-themed stays.
The interiors, as one guest put it, are «truly exceptional and tastefully decorated», combining the authentic character of an 18th-century maison de maître with genuine modern comforts. Large, light-filled living spaces, a fully equipped kitchen, gym, dedicated TV room, hi-fi system, ping-pong table and the estate's own wine cellar mean that there's something for everyone, whether it's an active morning in the vineyards or a leisurely afternoon without obligation.
Bed linen and towels are provided. The kitchen is fully equipped with utensils, crockery, Nespresso machine, washing machine, plancha and barbecue. Starlink WiFi connects you to the outside world if you need it, but we find that most guests quickly forget it exists.
The Rooms: Baptized with the Greatest Wines of Bordeaux

Each room at Château Gigault is named after a great Bordeaux wine or château, a detail full of character that testifies to the estate's deep ties with the region's wine culture. Each room is spacious, individually decorated and designed to feel more like a home than a hotel.
- Margaux - Named after the famous Left Bank appellation and its most illustrious estate. Elegant, refined and subtly seductive, just like the wine it honors.
- Haut-Brion - A tribute to one of Bordeaux's oldest and most prestigious châteaux, in Pessac-Léognan. Expect depth, warmth and a room that reveals itself over time.
- Larcis Ducasse - Named after the remarkable Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé. Precise, full of character and slightly off the beaten track, in the best sense of the word.
- Yquem - Inspired by the incomparable Château d'Yquem de Sauternes. Golden, generous and pleasing to the senses, for those who appreciate refined pleasures.
- Couhins - Inspired by the Pessac-Léognan estate known for its elegant whites. Fresh, airy and discreetly sophisticated.
- La Violette - Named after the rare and sought-after Pomerol estate. Intimate, warm and imbued with quiet distinction.
- Latour - A classic name in the Bordeaux lexicon. Solid, reliable, with a timeless character that never goes out of fashion.
- Pontet-Canet - Named after one of Pauillac's great estates. Warm, structured and deeply satisfying.

The Pool, the Park and the Art of Doing Nothing

There's an art to doing nothing in France, and Château Gigault is precisely the place to practice it. At the center of the estate's well-kept grounds is a 12 x 6-metre outdoor pool with diving board, surrounded by vineyards on all sides. It's the authentic French summer experience at its most essential: a long afternoon by the water, the barbecue going, a bottle of the estate open, and absolutely nothing to do.
For those who wish to actively explore the surrounding area, the estate provides four bicycles for adults and two for children. They're perfect for indulging in the morning ritual that Amelia, one of our warm hosts, described to perfection: «Bikes to get pastries from the bakery in the morning, a nice pool to relax in during the day, a barbecue to cook... 10/10, we'll be back!». Thanks to direct access to hiking trails, the Blayais vineyards can be explored at your own pace. Let yourself be charmed by this undulating landscape, where plots of old vines alternate with secret panoramas of the Gironde, glimpsed through the trees.

Terroir : What makes this corner of Bordeaux so special

To understand the wines you'll taste and the landscapes you'll cross, you first need to look at the soil beneath your feet. Château Gigault lies on a remarkably complex geological formation: a succession of clay and limestone strata, a veritable underground mille-feuille. At a depth of barely one meter, the limestone bedrock dictates the law, topped by alternating clays and chalk. This unique alchemy gives rise to wines of exceptional elegance, characterized by silky tannins and a deeply mineral, saline freshness.
On our 15 hectares, the vines are on average over 30 years old; deep, tranquil and intimately linked to this specific corner of the Gironde Right Bank, planted at 5,500 vines per hectare.
Wines: Your Cellar for the Week

Château Gigault wines are made under the guidance of Stéphane Derenoncourt, one of the world's most sought-after oenological consultants, present in over 140 estates around the globe. The estate's wine cellar is available to guests, providing the ideal setting for discovering these wines in the very places that produced them.
- Château Gigault (100% Merlot) - Classic Bordeaux, juicy and silky, with morello cherry aromas and floral notes. The wine to open on the first evening.
- Cuvée Viva (100% Merlot) - our prestige cuvée, aged 15 months in barrel, lively and fleshy, with ageing potential of up to 20 years. Acclaimed by the French and international press.
- Cuvée Nature (70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc) - sulfite-free, intense blueberry aromas and salivating acidity from our limestone soils. The most direct expression of our terroir.
- Cuvée Les Chardonnays (100% Chardonnay) - taut, mineral structure, aromas of lemon and honeysuckle, light oak and buttery notes on the palate.
Our four wines are available for purchase on our webshop, with delivery in France and selected international destinations.

Vineyard Experiences: Behind the Scenes of the Label

Staying at the heart of a working vineyard in the Bordeaux region, rather than simply walking through it for a day, offers a rare privilege: exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the estate. At Château Gigault, our guests can enjoy immersive, tailor-made experiences alongside the estate team, for a far deeper and more authentic discovery of wine than any traditional winery visit.
- Guided vineyard walks — learning to interpret the terroir, understanding grape varieties.
- Private cellar tours - from the sorting table to the barrel, understand exactly how these wines are made
- Vertical tastings on several vintages of Cuvée Viva - discover how this wine evolves and what the terroir is capable of over time
- Participation in the grape harvest (September-October, depending on vintage) - the most authentic French wine experience available
- Ceramic workshops with Daphné Verley - an eight-day creative journey, far from the world of wine, to discover the world of Mexican candelabras
Beyond the estate, the surrounding region rewards the curious. The medieval citadel of Blaye, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is just six kilometers away. Saint-Émilion and Royan are each about an hour's drive away. And the city of Bordeaux itself, with its world-famous restaurants and markets, is less than a fifty-minute drive away.
